These recipes came from an old cookbook of my Grandma's. The cover is missing, so I don't know the title...but it was printed as a fund-raiser for the Fort Wayne, IN homebound Meals Program. These are good, easy treats, great for gifts, quick refreshments at the next get-together, or a rainy afternoon (and simple enough to let older children "help" make them.)

Candy Cookies (No Bakes)

2 c. sugar
1 stick butter*
1/2 c. milk
3 c. quick oats
1/2 c. peanut butter
1/2 t. vanilla
5 T. cocoa

Mix together sugar, butter, and milk in saucepan, boil 1 minute. Add remaining ingredients. Drop from spoon onto waxed paper.

* Use real butter if you don't want to refrigerate these! Oleo (margarine) will make soft cookies that need to be kept in the refrigerator.

Turtles

12 oz. bag pecan halves
1 can condensed milk
1 c. light brown sugar
1 stick margarine
pinch salt
1/2 cap vanilla
3/4 c. light Karo syrup (corn syrup)
12 oz. bag semi-sweet chocolate chips

Arrange 3 pecan halves in triangle shape, separating by about 2", on 3 or 4 buttered cookie sheets. Combine milk, sugar, margarine, syrup, and salt, in heavy saucepan. Cook, stirring constantly, to soft ball stage (Liquid, dropped from a spoon into a cup of cold water forms soft ball). Add vanilla, stir well. Using large spoon, put about 2T. caramel on each group of nuts. Let set until cool.

Melt chips in microwave. Start with 2 min. at MED, stir. Continue heating and stirring in 30 sec. increments until chips are completely melted. "Frost" caramels. You may have to reheat the chocolate; it sets up quickly.

People love these! I have several friends who call and beg me to make them for them at Christmas.
