THE CAT'S MEOW offers sincerest apologies to those offended by last weeks' special mailing on the Bonsai Cat, which we are informed is, in the broadest sense, a HOAX. Whether or not Bonsai Cats are actually being made, we (personally) would still like to see this site shut down before some sick-o decides to try to 'copycat' that which is so disgustingly suggested. Should you feel similarly, sign and forward the petition, as suggested; there is still a chance we can prevent our furry ones from being harmed by an over-suggestible monster who thinks this site is 'kewl' by letting the site sponsors know we dislike it -- en masse!
And, now, we offer you this week's 'Internet potpourri'.... Should any of these gleanings inspire you to further investigation, be sure to visit our website for further information and helpful resources!
[1] BE ANGRY--SIN NOT
"In your anger do not sin" (Ephesians 4:26, NIV).
In one church where I was teaching I stated that it was
okay to be angry. One lady was absolutely amazed. She could
hardly believe her ears. She told me that she had been
taught all her life that Christians never get angry. So she
had reasoned in her mind: "Christians never get angry. I'm
always angry. Therefore I can never be a Christian!"
That night she was freed from 20 years of anguish and
received assurance of her salvation. She was indeed a
Christian because she had received Jesus as her Savior.
But she had never understood that anger is amoral; that is,
of itself it is neither right nor wrong. It's what we do
with it and how we handle it that matters. The Bible
actually teaches, "Be angry--sin not."
Anger itself (not rage, hostility, or bitterness) is a
God-given emotion. Its purpose is to fight evil and right
wrongs--to bring about change for good where change is
needed. This is how Florence Nightingale used her anger.
She was angry at the way wounded soldiers were being
treated, or rather, not being treated, so she did something
about it. We are meant to use our anger in the same way.
The reality is that everybody gets angry at one time or
another. Some people bury and deny theirs while others lash
out and hurt others. Neither of these is healthy, right,
nor Christian.
When expressing anger, we need to own it as our own, and
remember that the biblical principle is to speak the truth
in love. One way to do this is to say something like, "I
know my feelings are my responsibility, but I feel angry
and need to talk to you about such and such."
Never say to a person, "You make me angry" This is because
nobody can make us angry without our permission. All they
can do is trigger our anger--anger is always ours and our
responsibility to handle in helpful, not hurtful ways.
Unfortunately, however, when we have a lot of bottled-up
anger or anger from the past that has never been faced and
resolved, our "anger button" can get triggered very easily
and we over-react. What the other person does to me is
their issue, how I feel and react is always my
responsibility. And to the degree that I overreact is
always my problem.
One of the great needs (at least in our western society) is
to learn to identify our feelings--positive and
negative--to be honest about them, and learn how to handle
them in creative, rather than destructive, ways. Until we
do this, we have little chance of developing wholesome and
intimate relationships.
As the Bible teaches, "If you are angry, don't sin by
nursing your grudge. Don't let the sun go down with you
still angry--get over it quickly, for when you are angry
[and don't resolve it] you give a mighty foothold to the
devil" (Ephesians 4:25-27, TLB).
Suggested prayer: "Dear God, thank you for the gift of
feelings. Please help me to be in touch with all of mine,
be honest with them, and when expressing them, help me to
always speak the truth in love. Gratefully in Jesus' name.
Amen."

*** THE TOP 10 EASY, PRACTICAL WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR
DIET, YOUR HEALTH AND YOUR LIFE- by Philip Humbert ***
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Because I believe diet and exercise are so important, I'm often frustrated
with the recommendations I receive. Nutrition and natural health ideas are
often so negative (don't eat this, watch out for that) or so rigorous (be
sure to eat some raw, natural, organically grown vegetable I've never
heard of) or so complicated, I end up ignoring them. And yet, I know diet
is critical to my health and well-being, so I made up my own rules. My
objective was simplicity, so all of you with greater will-power and more
discipline, cut me some slack, OK? For the rest of us, I hope you find
them useful.
1. Eat less. I used to eat until I was full, and then snack as a hobby.
And, sometimes I still do. But, more and more, I decide when I've eaten
enough, leave room for a treat later, and simply choose to eat a little
less. I think it helps.
2. Drink more water. I used to try to drink 8 glasses a day, but I usually
ended up either losing count…or just going to the bathroom a lot. Now, on
my way to the table I stop by the sink and grab a glass of water. I figure
that's more water than most people drink, it probably helps me eat less
(see Rule #1), and sometimes it reminds me to drink even more. Close
enough.
3. Eat more fruit. Benjamin Franklin said, "An apple a day keeps the
doctor away." I just know apples, a banana, some grapes or something
"exotic" like a mango or a kiwi tastes good, and it's the fastest, most
portable and convenient food I've found. A handful of those little baby
carrots beats a sandwich by a good 90 seconds!
4. Eat your vegetables. Yeah, still listening to my mother. But on the
positive side, they're so easy! No sauces, no mixing or blending or
nothing! Just steam or microwave, and they're great for adding color to a
meal (greens, yellows, and beans in all sorts of colors). I know fresh and
organically grown is best, and sometimes I buy them that way….
5. Eat more rice and baked potatoes. I score points with my doctor, my
"significant other" and again, it's about the easiest cooking I've figured
out.
6. Stretch several times every day. I used to follow a routine that
recommended stretching and yoga for about 30 minutes every morning.
Wonderful stuff! Very healthy. And someday I'm going to give it another
try! For now, every morning, and several times during the day, I stand up
and try to reach the ceiling. I bend, twist, shake my shoulders, breath
deep, whatever seems to feel good at the moment. Then I get back to work.
7. Avoid exercise and elevators. OK, I believe jogging and sweating and
lifting weights are good for me. And I do some of it. But I also find it
useful to walk around the block to get the mail (the box is across the
street) or take the stairs instead of the elevator. I walk the dog, push
the lawnmower and play tennis and golf with my friends. That way I figure
I'm exercising and leaving the gyms for the rest of you.
8. Spend time with friends. Talking, sharing dreams, giving and receiving
support, solving life's great problems and debating politics or religion
with a friend does wonders for the soul. And, hugs are good. And if you
have a life-partner, I find talking regularly seems to avoid a number of
other problems, as well!
9. Laugh every day. Tell a joke, wrestle with your dog or play with the
kids next door, but have some fun! Life's short.
10. Plan for dessert! At the end of the day, I really like something
special to top it all off. So, I plan for a bite of chocolate or a cup of
low-fat pudding or yogurt or a handful of fresh grapes. It sure seems to
beat restlessly searching the cupboards and refrigerator for "something"
and ending up with a big bowl of ice cream! Whatever "rules" work for you,
find your own way to move toward better health, more fun, and higher
levels of personal fulfillment!

Breathe deeply...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prayer is not asking.
Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God,
at his disposition,
and listening to his voice in the depths of our hearts.
- Mother Theresa
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Previously we spoke of the form of prayer referred to as mantras. Mantras are often associated with the prayer form called "prayer without ceasing" - that state of being versus the state of doing.
The opening commentary is again from Peace Pilgrim...
"Prayer without ceasing is not ritualized, nor are there even words. It is a constant state of awareness of oneness with God; it is a sincere seeking for a good thing; and it is a concentration on the thing sought, with faith that it is obtainable. All right prayer has good effect, but if you give your whole life to the prayer you multiply its power...No one really knows the full power of prayer. Of course, there is a relationship between prayer and action. Receptive prayer results in an inner receiving, which motivates to right action."
"When I started out on my pilgrimage, I was using walking for two purposes at that time. One was to contact people, and I still use it for that purpose today. But the other was as a prayer discipline. To keep me concentrated on my prayer for peace. And after a few years I discovered something. I discovered that I no longer need the prayer discipline. I pray without ceasing now. My personal prayer is 'make me an instrument through which only truth can speak.'"
-Peace Pilgrim
Today, select and chant a mantra that resonates with you. This can be from the last lesson or create your own personal prayer.

Prayer without Ceasing from The Way of the Pilgrim (book excerpt)
This story, from the Catholic tradition, is of a Russian homeless man of the 1800's seeking to understand the meaning of prayer without ceasing.

Closing Thoughts
"We must pray literally without ceasing - without ceasing; in every occurrence and employment of our lives. You know I mean that prayer of the heart which is independent of place or situation, or which is, rather, a habit of lifting up the heart to God, as in a constant communication with Him."
-Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton
"Every good thing you do, every good thing you say, every good thought you think, vibrates on and on and never ceases. The evil remains only until it is overcome by the good, but the good remains forever."
-Peace Pilgrim
There may be a seed of wisdom in this lesson that when shared with another can grow and blossom, perhaps a message of support for their evolution, spiritual or healing journey. We encourage you to pass these lessons on and on. If nothing else, you'll make someone's day - since you would only forward such a message to someone you care about.

Perception
"It can be a real curse." (Addison)
_____________________________________________________________
Amazingly, he had told me. “It can be a real curse.”
You know, one of those farm stands selling fresh produce… A
gray, weather-beaten wooden stand, piled high with corn,
tomatoes, squash and green-beans… I had stopped for some
corn.
But the view! What awesome beauty lay just beyond! I
marveled at the gently slopping hills and dales of the
farmer’s vast holdings. Off in the distance, perfect rows
of seedling trees. And over there, a vegetable garden; the
reason I had come. Yes open fields, majestic oaks, birds
singing in nearby Maple trees… And of course, the large
white farmhouse; an Irish Setter, lazily sprawled on a
lounge chair on its porch.
Beautiful; picturesque…
I was daydreaming about what it would be like to hold such
beautiful land; to work its warm acrid soil; to bring forth
such sustenance as I might from the earth for all mankind…
I blurted out, “Wow, this is great! You’ve got a beautiful
farm here!"
And his response… “A farm like this can be a real curse.”
I was beside myself! A curse he had said!
Just then I noticed his face; I could see the look of
strain; the look of worry… I suspected he was having
trouble making ends meet. Property taxes I surmised.
A curse, he had called it.

“Welcome to the 14th Annual Apple Festival and Craft Show.” The
large banner touts at the entrance to Gould’s Farm.
And there, on a makeshift stage… Yeah, it’s Steve Charney. Not
too many years ago he had quit his job at Microsoft Corporation
to become a Magician and Ventriloquist.
"Why is broccoli different than boogers?
“Kids won't eat broccoli."
Children and parents alike howl in laughter… Me too. I don’t
know; sometimes I laugh at the dumbest things!
Go get’em Steve…
And over there, The Schodack Valley Volunteer Fire Dept had set
up a concession stand and was selling Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and
French Fries… Raising money for more equipment no doubt. Smoke;
the smell of barbequing food; and yes, the din and laughter of
people bustling about.
And the old barn now transformed… Temporarily gone is the farm
machinery; “Visit the Haunted House” the banner entices. Festive
in Orange and Black streamers; ghoulish sounds emanating from its
dark and foreboding interior!
And of course, Kenneth Bruno… A politician running for District
Attorney of Renselear County. Flyers, pens, key chains; set
upon a rickety table, and of course, just behind sits Ken. A
smiling, amiable face.
Yes, welcome to the 14th Annual Apple Festival and Craft Show at
the Gould Farm.
Four large tents… Over 100 country craft vendors selling their
handcrafted wares. The rain was somewhat disappointing. At the
start of the day, the many vendors had predicted low customer
turnout and lackluster sales. At least that’s what they had
thought then. They were wrong.
And did I mention the farm-store? No, not a weather-beaten stand,
but a large, going concern. Vegetables, apples, cider, pumpkins,
fresh fruit pies of all sorts, freshly baked cookies…
And John Gould; soiled white apron over a flannel shirt; thick
tangles of white hair, and a big smile for all. He dotted this
way and that behind the bakery counter. A busy man it seemed.
He handed me the apple-pie I had ordered. Apple Crumb of course…
My favorite. The bottom still felt warm to the touch in its
white cardboard box.
“John, great farm you have here!” I just had to compliment him.
“Thanks, A farm like this is a great opportunity.” He said. You
could sense the enthusiasm and energy in his very voice.

“Two shall be born a whole wide world apart. And one day out of
darkness they shall stand. And read life's meaning in each
other's eyes.” (Proverbs 17:17)
_________________________________________________________________
“It’s a curse.” Addison had said…
“It’s a great opportunity.” Said John.
Two points of view; two beliefs. Indeed, two distinct visions of
how they would see their lots in life.
Why does one eke out a living; barely making ends meet, while
still another flourishes? Why does one look out across his land
and see burden, hardship, indeed, the occasion and season of his
failure. And the other, with great expectation, a chance to
enterprise a splendid success!
No, It is not a thousand thigs to do with farmland that I would
describe today, but about the way we see the world; about the
way we interpret our circumstances; indeed, about the way we
would pursue our fortunes!
Look… Look inward to what God has given onto you… Your skills,
your passions, your station, your circumstances. What do you
see? Do you see but a curse or do you see but opportunity?
Yes, this is life’s most profound choice… The very choice of
success or failure!
Oh… I almost forgot, attend:
There… Over by the farm-store… Someone costumed as a large
round candy accompanied by a middle-aged woman in a smart
business suit. The human-size red candy seems to be a real
draw for all the young children. He shakes their little hands
and exchanges pleasantries… Oh course, they’re delighted,
they circle about and marvel! Meanwhile, the woman hands out
flyers and engages the parents.
But then a muffled voice emanates from the costume… “Mom,
how much longer; it’s hot in here!”
“Quit complaining if you want to get paid!” She admonishes.
Yeah, welcome to the 14th Annual Apple Festival and Craft
Show at the Gould Farm.

"Seven New Angels"
February first, two thousand and three,
as returning to Earth, a shuttle was lost.
Two women and five men, lost in the debris,
realizing their dreams, but paying a high cost.
A very sad day, for families and friends,
of two women and five men, living their dreams.
Sailing the heavens, till the trip suddenly ends,
as mighty explosions, thru the sky streams.
In Heaven now, seven new angels reside,
two women and five men, their lives have been taken.
For their life long dreams, they lived and died,
and now a whole world, by this tragedy is shaken.
The entire world weeps, and is in despair,
for two women and five men, who traveled in space,
All the joy and wonders, that together they share,
they now share with each other, in God's Heavenly Grace.

John 3:16
In the city of Chicago, one cold, dark night, a blizzard was setting
in. A little boy was selling newspapers on the corner, the people were in
and out of the cold. The little boy was so cold that he wasn't trying to
sell many papers.
He walked up to a policeman and said, Mister, you wouldn't happen to
know where a poor boy could find a warm place to sleep tonight would you?
You see, I sleep in a box up around the corner there and down the alley and
it's awful cold in there for tonight. Sure would be nice to have a warm
place to stay.
The policeman looked down at the little boy and said, You go down the
street to that big white house and you knock on the door. When they come
out the door you just say John 3:16, and they will let you in.
So he did. He walked up the steps and knocked on the door, and a lady
answered.
He looked up and said, John 3:16. The lady said, Come on in, Son.
She took him in and she sat him down in a split bottom rocker in front of a
great big old fireplace, and she went off. The boy sat there for a while
and thought to himself: John 3:16....I don't understand it, but it sure
makes a cold boy warm.
Later she came back and asked him Are you hungry?
He said, Well, just a little. I haven't eaten in a couple of days,
and I guess I could stand a little bit of food. The lady took him in the
kitchen and sat him down to a table full of wonderful food. He ate and ate
until he couldn't eat any more. Then he thought to himself: John 3:16...
Boy, I sure don't understand it but it sure makes a hungry boy full.
She took him upstairs to a bathroom to a huge bathtub filled with warm
water, and he sat there and soaked for a while. As he soaked, he thought to
himself:
John 3:16... I sure don't understand it, but it sure makes a dirty
boy clean. You know, I've not had a bath, a real bath, in my whole life.
The only bath I ever had was when I stood in front of that big old fire
hydrant as they flushed it out.
The lady came in and got him. She took him to a room, tucked him into
a big old feather bed, pulled the covers up around his neck, kissed him
goodnight and turned out the lights. As he lay in the darkness and looked
out the window at the snow coming down on that cold night, he thought to
himself: John 3:16... I don't understand it but it sure makes a tired boy
rested.
The next morning the lady came back up and took him down again to that
same big table full of food.
After he ate, she took him back to that same big old split bottom
rocker in front of the fireplace and picked up a big old Bible. She sat
down in front of him and looked into his young face.
Do you understand John 3:16? she asked gently.
He replied, No, Ma'am, I don't. The first time I ever heard it was
last night when the policeman told me to use it. She opened the Bible to
John 3:16 and began to explain to him about Jesus. Right there, in front of
that big old fireplace, he gave his heart and life to Jesus. He sat there
and thought:
John 3:16. .. .
I don't understand it, but it sure makes a lost boy feel safe.
You know, I have to confess I don't understand it either, how God was
willing to send His Son to die for me, and how Jesus would agree to do such
a thing. I don't understand the agony of the Father and every angel in
heaven as they watched Jesus suffer and die. I don't understand the intense
love for ME that kept Jesus on the cross till the end. I don't understand
it, but it sure does make life worth living.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life.
If you aren't ashamed to do this, please follow the directions. Jesus
said, If you are ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you before my Father.
Pass this on only if you mean it. I do Love God. He is my source of
existence. He keeps me functioning each and every day. Phil 4:13 If you
love God and are not ashamed of all the marvelous things he has done for
you, send this on.
Take 60 seconds & give this a shot! Let's just see if Satan stops
this one.
All you do is
1) Simply say a small prayer for the person who sent you this,
(Father, God bless this person in whatever it is that You know he or she may
be needing this day!).
2) Then send it on to five other people. Within hours five people
have prayed for you, and you caused a multitude of people to pray to God for
other people.
Whether or not you believe in a deity named Jesus, whether or not you are a Christian, in all traditions, in some form, there is prayer for others. Should you feel unable to pass this on because your faith tradition differs from the one in this letter, please take time to offer a small prayer for the welfare of those you know and love, as well as those unknown to you. Somewhere, whether you know it or not, someone will be blessed by your prayer on their behalf. -- ed., TCM
