The 61st Anniversary of D DayJune 6, 2005

"St James Infirmary"

the soldier's cat

On June 6, 1944, a date thereafter known as "D Day", the Allied troops invaded Normandy on the coast of France. This gargantuan battle, the cooperative effort of eleven nations, was a major turning point in World War II. Of 154,000 men of the Allied forces who went into the foggy seas and skies, 4,500 died in that one day's battle.

A Little Cat Angel

the little cat angel waits

High in the courts of heaven today
a little cat angel waits;
With the other angels she will not play,
but she sits alone at the gates.
"For I know my human will come" says she,
"and when he comes he will call for me."

The other angels pass her by
as they hurry toward the throne,
And she watches them with a wistful eye
as she sits at the gates alone.
"But I know if I just wait patiently
that someday my human will call for me."

And her human, down on earth below,
as he sits in his easy chair,
Forgets sometimes, and whispers low
to the cat who is not there --
But the little cat angel perks her ears
and dreams it's her human's voice she hears.

And when at last her human waits
out in the dark and wet and cold
For the hand of death to open the door
that leads to those courts of gold,
He will hear a sound through the darkening dew --
a little cat angel's welcoming mew.
