Cats In The News: Meow Mix Cafe

Simba wore a tuxedo to greet his guests...and licked himself and rolled on the floor when he got bored. Eartha Kitt ("Catwoman" on the Batman TV show) traded quips with a ginger cat. Both the famous and the furry attended Wednesday's opening of New York's newest eatery, the Meow Mix Cafe.

The 3,500 sq. ft. Meow Mix Cafe, located at 489 Fifth Ave. (between 41st and 42nd streets -- just across the street from the main branch of the New York Public Library) is a project of the Meow Mix company of Seacaucus, NJ. It's designed to offer a pleasing experience for both cats and their owners, filling the gap for feline-friendly facilities. No dogs are allowed, and catnip must be checked at the door. But, for those lucky kitties who can get a reservation, this diner offers the best in haute cuisine -- Meow Mix's new Wet Pouch catfoods, featuring tasty delights like Gobblicious, Upstream Dream, and Fillet Meow. Owners accompanying them can enjoy mini crab cakes and tenderloin of beef with horseradish sauce on a baguette.

Appetites sated by the tasteful fare, the owner and cat can then play a game like Hook, Line, and Sinker, where the cat helps the owner manipulate a machine to win a prize, or shop for both Wet Pouch and old favorite varieties of Meow Mix, as well as toys, dishes, and beds at the Meow Mix Store.

Elderly and homebound cat lovers need not miss out on the delicious cuisine, either. The Meow Mix Mobile will offer home-delivery of the new cat foods.

"I believe this concept might have legs, four in this case," said Ira Cohen, Meow Mix's Marketing Director. If it does, 80,000 hungry cats across America will have a chance to eat at versions of the Meow Mix Cafe as it travels across the country.

The Cafe will be open from noon to 8 pm through Sunday, August 22, 2004. All proceeds from the project will go to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
